नरदेवोऽसि वेषेण नटवत्कर्मणाऽद्विजः॥ ५ ॥
nara-devo’si veṣeṇa naṭavat karmaṇā’dvijaḥ
Synonyms
kaḥ — who; tvam — [are] you; balī — possessed of such affront [or might (balī san)32]; loke — [that] in this world [asmin loke]; mat-śaraṇe — [which is] under my protection [where I alone am the protector of those in need of shelter (aham eva śaraṇaṁ rakṣitā yasya tasmin)]; balāt — [you] violently [prasahya33]; haṁsi — inflict harm [ghātayasi34]; abalān — on the weak and helpless [durbalān35]; naṭa-vat — like an actor [naṭa iva]; asi — you are; nara-devaḥ — a king; veṣeṇa — by attire alone [(veṣa-mātreṇa); but not in truth (na tu vastutaḥ)36]; [whereas (tu)37]; karmaṇā — by action; advijaḥ — [you] are opposed to the twice-born order [(dvija-virodhī);38 or a śūdra].
Translation
Who are you, possessed of such affront, that in this world, which is under my protection, you violently inflict harm on the weak and helpless? Like an actor, you are a king by attire alone, whereas by action, you are opposed to the twice-born order.
