विशेषतो धर्मशीलो राजा लोकपतिर्गुरुः ॥ ४१ ॥
viśeṣato dharma-śīlo rājā loka-patir guruḥ
Synonyms
atha — consequently; puruṣaḥ — a person; bubhūṣuḥ — who is intent upon his own progressive well-being [(udbhavitum icchuḥ);254 (sva-kṣemam icchuḥ)255]; viśeṣataḥ — especially; dharma-śīlaḥ — a dharmic; rājā — king; loka-patiḥ — a public leader [loka-pālaḥ256]; guruḥ — or a spiritual preceptor [upadeṣṭā dharmasyeti śeṣaḥ257]; na kvacit seveta — should never resort to [should never harbor attachment for (anasaktiḥ)258]; etāni — these [five immoral acts, beginning with gambling (dhyūtādīni), because they are the residential grounds of Kali, the source of immorality (yato adharma-hetoḥ kaleḥ vāsa-sthānāni);259 or the five immoral principles, beginning with falsehood (anṛtādi-rūpāṇy etāni)260].
Translation
Consequently, a person who is intent upon his own progressive well-being, especially a dharmic king, a public leader, or a spiritual preceptor, should never resort to these five immoral acts.
