न ते गुडाकेशयशोधराणां बद्धाञ्जलेर्वै भयमस्ति किञ्चित् ।
न वर्तितव्यं भवता कथञ्चन क्षेत्रे मदीये त्वमधर्मबन्धुः ॥ ३१ ॥
na te guḍākeśa-yaśo-dharāṇāṁ
baddhāñjaler vai bhayam asti kiñcit
na vartitavyaṁ bhavatā kathañcana
kṣetre madīye tvam adharma-bandhuḥ
Synonyms
rājā — the king; uvāca — said; te — you [lit., “of you” (tava)175]; baddha-añjaleḥ — [whose] palms are joined in supplication; na vai asti — should not have [lit., “there should not be”]; kiñcit — any [kiñcid api176]; bhayam — fear; [of us (asmākam agrataḥ)177]; [who (ye)]; yaśaḥ-dharāṇām — uphold the glory [or enhance the renown (kīrti-vardhanānām)178]; guḍākeśa — [of] Arjuna, the master over sleep; [yet (kintu)]; madīye kṣetre — within my kingdom [within the territory that is under my protection (mat-pālite deśe)179]; na kathañcana — there is no place at all [not even a single restricted part or locale (na kenāpy aṁśena); beginning from the body of any given entity and extending to the kingdom as a whole (deham ārabhya rāṣṭra-paryanta-sthāna-vivakṣayā)180]; vartitavyam — to be inhabited [or resorted to (stheyam)181]; bhavatā — by you [tvayā182]; [because (yasmāt)]; tvam — you; bandhuḥ — [are] the friend [the personal attendant (anubandhī)183]; adharma — [of] unrighteousness.
Translation
The king said: You, whose palms are joined in supplication, should not have any fear of us, who uphold the glory of Arjuna, the master over sleep. Yet within my kingdom, there is no place at all that you may inhabit, because you are the friend of adharma.
