लोभोऽनृतं चौर्यमनार्यमंहो ज्येष्ठा च माया कलहश्च दम्भः ॥ ३२ ॥
anupravṛtto’yam adharma-pūgaḥ
lobho’nṛtaṁ cauryam anāryam aṁho
jyeṣṭhā ca māyā kalahaś ca dambhaḥ
Synonyms
[The basis of Kali’s friendship with or personal attendance to adharma is now made explicit in the following verse (adharma-bandhutvam eva prapañchayati tvām iti).184]; ayam — a [lit., “this”]; adharma-pūgaḥ — host of vices that constitute unrighteousness [adharma-samudāyaḥ185]; lobhaḥ — [including] greed [obsessive desire for the wealth or property belonging to others (para-dhanādy abhilāṣaḥ)186]; anṛtam — untruthfulness [(mithyā-bhāṣaṇam);187 speaking in a manner that distorts the factual nature of events (ayathārtha-bhāṣaṇam)188]; cauryam — thievery; anāryam — moral depravity [(daurjanyam);189 or wickedness (śāṭhyam)190]; aṁhaḥ — sinful proclivity [(pāpam);191 or contravention of socio-religious duty (sva-dharma-tyāgaḥ)]; jyeṣṭhā192 — misfortune [(alakṣmīḥ); including poverty and deprivation (dāridryam)193]; māyā ca — deceit [(kapaṭam); or concealment of the truth (apahnavaḥ)194]; kalahaḥ — quarrel [or hostility (virodhaḥ)195]; ca — and; dambhaḥ — pride [or egoic identification (ahaṁkāraḥ)196]; anupravṛttaḥ — has proceeded in immediate [and entire] pursuance [sarvataḥ pravṛttaḥ]; tvām — [of] you; vartamānam — who have taken up residence [or who are coextensively present (sannidhānam)197]; deheṣu — in the bodies; nara-deva — [of] kings [(rājñām), who are meant to be the protectors of morality and religion (dharma-pālakānām);198 or in the bodies of human beings and gods alike (narāṇāṁ devānāñ ca deheṣu), implying that even the devas become intent on unrighteousness when their bodies are taken possession of by Kali, to say nothing of human beings (devā api tvad-ākrānta-dehā lobhādy adharma-niṣṭhā bhavanti kiṁ punar narā iti bhāvaḥ)199].
Translation
A host of vices that constitute unrighteousness—including greed, untruthfulness, thievery, moral depravity, sinful proclivity, misfortune, deceit, quarrel, and pride—has proceeded in immediate and entire pursuance of you, who have taken up residence in the bodies of kings.
