SB 1.17.30

पतितं पादयोर्वीरः कृपया दीनवत्सलः ।
शरण्यो नावधीच्छ्लोक्य आह चेदं हसन्निव ॥ ३० ॥
patitaṁ pādayor vīraḥ kṛpayā dīna-vatsalaḥ
śaraṇyo nāvadhīc chlokya āha cedaṁ hasann iva

Synonyms

kṛpayā — out of mercy; ślokyaḥ — the praiseworthy [sukīrty arhaḥ171]; vīraḥ — hero; dīna-vatsalaḥ — [who was] benevolent to the helpless; śaraṇyaḥ — [and] worthy of refuge [āśrayārhaḥ172]; na avadhīt — did not kill [na hatavān173]; [Kali]; patitam — who had fallen; pādayoḥ — at his feet; ca — but [rather (kintu)]; āha — spoke [to him]; idam — the following words [vakṣyamāṇam]; iva — as if; hasan — smiling [as if amused by the thought that the very person whom he intended to kill with his own hand would now be protected by him (yaj jighāṁsor api mama hastāt tvam adya rakṣito’bhūr iti manonulāpāt)174].

Translation

Out of mercy, the praiseworthy hero, who was benevolent to the helpless and worthy of refuge, did not kill Kali, who had fallen at his feet, but rather spoke to him the following words as if smiling.
