पृच्छति स्माश्रुवदनां विवत्सामिव मातरम् ॥ १८ ॥
pṛcchati smāśru-vadanāṁ vivatsām iva mātaram
Synonyms
caran — while wandering about; ekena — with [i.e., on] one; padā — leg [pādena58]; dharmaḥ — Dharma [the presiding deity of dharma who had assumed the form of a bull (dharmādhidevo vṛṣa-rūpa-dharaḥ)]; upalabhya — came upon; gām — a cow [the Earth goddess who had assumed the form of a cow (go-rūpa-dharāṁ pṛthvīm)]; vicchāyām — who was stripped of her luster [(hata-prabhām);59 (nistejaskām)]; aśru-vadanām — [and] whose face was covered with tears [rudantīm]; iva — like; mātaram — a mother; vivatsām — who had lost her child [(naṣṭāpatyām);60 (putra-rahitā)]; pṛcchati sma — he thus inquired from her as follows [tathā tām apṛcchat61].
Translation
While wandering about on one leg, Dharma [in the form of a bull] came upon a cow who was stripped of her luster and whose face was covered with tears, like a mother who had lost her child. He thus inquired from her as follows.
