SB 1.16.10

सूत उवाच
यदा परीक्षित्कुरुजाङ्गलेऽवसत्कलिं प्रविष्टं निजचक्रवर्तिते ।
निशम्य वार्तामनतिप्रियां ततः शरासनं संयुगशौण्डिराददे ॥ १० ॥
sūta uvāca
yadā parīkṣit kuru-jāṅgale’vasat
kaliṁ praviṣṭaṁ nija-cakravartite
niśamya vārtām anatipriyāṁ tataḥ
śarāsanaṁ saṁyuga-śauṇḍir ādade

Synonyms

sūtaḥ — Śrī Sūta; uvāca — said; yadā — when; parīkṣit — Parīkṣit; avasat — who was residing [vasan36]; kuru-jāṅgale — in Kuru-jāṅgala [in Hastināpura (hastināpure)37]; niśamya — heard [śuśrāva38]; anati-priyām — the disturbingly unpleasant [atiśayenāpriyam39]; vārtām — news; kalim — [that] Kali; pravi-ṣṭam — had entered; nija-cakravartite — his kingdom [the territory protected by his army (sva-senayā paripālite deśe)]; tataḥ — then [tadā]; śauṇḍiḥ — being highly skilled [courageous and bold (pragalbha)]; saṁyuga — [in] battle [yuddhe]; ādade — he took up [jagrāha40]; śarāsanam — [his] bow [(dhanuḥ);41 to subdue the villain (duṣṭa-nigrahārtham)].

Translation

Śrī Sūta said: When Parīkṣit, who was residing in Kuru-jāṅgala, heard the disturbingly unpleasant news that Kali had entered his kingdom, then, being highly skilled in battle, he took up his bow to subdue the villain.
