तेजो हृतं खलु मयाभिहतश्च मत्स्यः सज्जीकृतेन धनुषाधिगता च कृष्णा ॥ ७ ॥
rājñāṁ svayaṁvara-mukhe smara-durmadānām
tejo hṛtaṁ khalu mayābhihataś ca matsyaḥ
sajjīkṛtena dhanuṣādhigatā ca kṛṣṇā
Synonyms
[In the following ten verses, Arjuna recalls Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s benevolent acts (śrī-kṛṣṇopakārān anusmarati yat-saṁśrayād iti daśabhiḥ).29]; yat — by whose [(yasya), Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s]; saṁśrayāt — support [or power (balāt)]; tejaḥ — the influence [(prabhāvaḥ); or pride (abhimāna-lakṣaṇam)30]; rājñām — of the kings [i.e., Jarāsandha (jarāsandhādi)]; durmadānām — who were excessively intoxicated [ati-mattānām]; smara — [with] passionate desire [kāmena]; upāgatānām — [and] who had assembled; drupada-geham — at the palace of King Drupada; svayaṁvara-mukhe — for [Draupadī’s] bridegroom selection ceremony; khalu hṛtam — was “indeed” vanquished [meaning, from the very outset, in the precise moment that I simply grasped my bow (ādau dhanur grahaṇenaiva dhvastam)]; mayā — by me; [thereupon (paścāt)]; matsyaḥ ca — the fish [revolving on a wheel above (yantropari bhraman mīnaḥ)]; abhihataḥ — was pierced; dhanuṣā — by my bow; sajjī-kṛtena — fitted with an arrow [āropita-jyā-bāṇakena31]; [and by virtue of their defeat (tatas tān vijitya)]; kṛṣṇā ca — Draupadī; adhigatā — was also obtained [prāptā]; [by me (mayā)32].
Translation
It was with His support [or by His power] that the pride of the kings who were excessively intoxicated with passionate desire and who had assembled at the palace of King Drupada for Draupadī’s svayaṁvara ceremony, was “indeed” vanquished by me [at the mere grasp of my bow]. Thereupon, I pierced the revolving fish with my bow, fitted with an arrow, and by thus defeating them, I also obtained Draupadī’s hand.
