चीरवासा निराहारो बद्धवाङ्मुक्तमूर्धजः ।
दर्शयन्नात्मनो रूपं जडोन्मत्तपिशाचवत् ॥ ४३ ॥
cīra-vāsā nirāhāro baddha-vāṅ mukta-mūrdhajaḥ
darśayann ātmano rūpaṁ jaḍonmatta-piśācavat

Synonyms

[Having thus described Yudhiṣṭhira’s internal process, Sūta now depicts his external condition in this and the following verse (tad evam ātma-pratipattim uktvā bāhya-sthitim āha cīra-vāsā iti dvābhyām).252]; cīra-vāsāḥ — dressed in ragged clothing [or a garment made of bark (valkalaṁ vastram);253 which demonstrates his being bereft of external objects of enjoyment (bahir-viṣaya-bhoga-rāhityaṁ darśitam)254]; nirāhāraḥ — abstaining from food [implying a death sentence for the vital force (prāṇa-daṇḍa uktaḥ)]; baddha-vāk — observing silence [(maunī), implying cessation of all sensory functions (vāg-upalakṣita sarvendriyoparama uktaḥ); and a death sentence for speech (vāg-daṇḍa)255]; mukta-mūrdhajaḥ — [and] allowing his hair to become disheveled [(vikṣiptā keśāḥ);256 implying a death sentence for the body (deha-daṇḍa uktaḥ)]; [Yudhiṣṭhira, in order to disengage from all worldly relations (loka-sambandha-nivṛtty artham)]; darśayan — exhibited; ātmanaḥ — his [svasya]; rūpam — outward appearance [ākāram257]; vat — like; jaḍa — [that of] a dull-witted [or mindless person, vacant of all discrimination (antaḥ-karaṇa-viveka-śūnyaḥ)258]; unmatta — a madman [displaying sensory impairment as though drunk on wine (indriya-vikalaḥ madirā-matta-vat)]; piśāca — [or] a person possessed by a ghost [(bhūta-grastaḥ), displaying bodily impairment (deha-vikalaḥ)].

Translation

Dressed in ragged clothing, abstaining from food, observing silence, and allowing his hair to become disheveled, Yudhiṣṭhira exhibited an outward appearance like that of a dull-witted person, a madman, or a person possessed by a ghost.
