मृत्यावपानं सोत्सर्गं तं पञ्चत्वे ह्यजोहवीत् ॥ ४१ ॥
mṛtyāv apānaṁ sotsargaṁ taṁ pañcatve hy ajohavīt
Synonyms
[The manner of Yudhiṣṭhira’s having internally cut off all bonds is now described in the following two verses (bandhana-sañchedana-prakāram āha vācam iti dvābhyām).238]; juhāva — [he mentally] offered [(samarpayāmāsa);239 or dissolved (pravilāpitavān ity arthaḥ)240]; vācam — his speech [standing for all of his senses (vācam ity upalakṣaṇaṁ sarvendriyāṇi); meaning both the cognitive and conative senses along with their objects (saviṣayāṇy ubhayendriyāṇi)241]; manasi — into the mind; tat — that [the mind (manaḥ); here referring to the individual psyche in its normal operational modes and not to its higher functions related to transcendence (vyavahārātmakaṁ mano-haṁsaṁ na tu paramārthātmakam api)242]; prāṇe — into the ascending life force [the mind’s functions being subordinate to the life force (prāṇādīna-vṛttitvāt)]; tam ca — that [the ascending prāṇa]; itare — into its counterforce [the descending life force (apāne), being drawn down by the latter (tenākarṣaṇāt)]; apānam — the descending prāṇa; sa-utsargam — along with its expulsive functions [apāna-vyāpāra utsargas tat-sahitam]; mṛtyau — into death [meaning the presiding deity of death (tad-adhiṣṭātṛ-devatāyām), by this it is to be understood that he dissolved his speech and everything else along with their vital functions into death (anenaiva vāgādiṣv api tat-tat-karma-sāhityaṁ jñeyam)]; ajohavīt — [and then] offered; tam — that [death (mṛtyum)]; pañcatve hi — into the body itself [the singularity constituted of the five primary elements (pañca-bhūtānām aikyaṁ dehe), considering death as pertaining to the body alone and not to the ātmā (dehasyaiva mṛtyur nātmana iti bhāvitavān ity arthaḥ)].
Translation
He mentally offered [or dissolved] his speech and all other senses into the mind, the mind into the ascending life force (prāṇa), the ascending prāṇa into its counterforce [the descending life force (apāna)], the descending prāṇa along with its expulsive functions into death [the presiding deity of death], and then offered death into the body itself, the singularity constituted of the five primary elements.
