निर्ममो निरहङ्कारः सञ्छिन्नाशेषबन्धनः ॥ ४० ॥
nirmamo nirahaṅkāraḥ sañchinnāśeṣa-bandhanaḥ
Synonyms
visṛjya — having left behind; tatra — there [in the palace (gṛhe)229]; tat sarvam — all of his possessions; dukūla — [including] silk garments; valaya-ādikam — bracelets and other ornaments [such as crowns and other precious items (kirīṭādi-grahaḥ)230]; nirmamaḥ — [Yudhiṣṭhira] was freed from the appropriation of objects as “mine” [from the egoism of proprietorship over the body and its relations as his own (dehādy anubandhiṣu svakīyatvābhimāna-rahitaḥ)231]; nirahaṅkāraḥ — [and] from the conditioned “I-sense” [from the misidentification of the self with the body (dehātma-bhrama-rahitaḥ)]; [the cause in this regard is now stated (tatra hetum āha sañchinneti)232]; sañchinna — [having] completely cut off [to the root (samyak samūlaṁ chinnam)233]; aśeṣa-bandhanaḥ — all bonds [of ignorance (avidyā-lakṣaṇam);234 or external coverings (bāhyāvaraṇam), such as the sense of being a benefactor or caretaker for his children and others (putrādīnām upakāritva-buddhiḥ);235 or all limiting adjuncts imposed upon the self (upādhayaḥ);236 and being thus situated, he was firmly resolved upon liberation from primordial nature and its effects (yena tathā-bhūtaḥ prakṛtyādi-mokṣam anusaṁhitavān ity arthaḥ)237].
Translation
Having left behind in the palace all of his possessions, including silk garments, bracelets, and other ornaments, Yudhiṣṭhira was freed from the appropriation of objects as “mine” and from the conditioned “I-sense,” having completely cut off to the root all bonds [of ignorance].
