भूभारः क्षपितो येन जहौ तच्च कलेवरम् ॥ ३५ ॥
bhū-bhāraḥ kṣapito yena jahau tac ca kalevaram
Synonyms
yathā — just as; [Bhagavān203]; dhatte — assumes; jahyāt — [and] relinquishes; rūpāṇi — [His own] forms [(svīyāni śarīrāṇi); or the internal dispositions that are intrinsic to those forms (tat-tad-bhāvān)204]; matsya-ādi — such as that of a fish [the Matsya avatāra]; yathā naṭaḥ — in the manner of a stage actor [who, while situated in his own form (nija-rūpeṇa sthita eva), assumes and then gives up other forms (rūpāntarāṇi dhatte antardhatte ca)205]; [so too, Bhagavān, while situated in His own form (tathā bhagavān api nija rūpa sthita eva)206]; jahau — withdrew [caused to disappear (antardhānaṁ kṛtavān)]; tat ca — that very [tad api207]; kalevaram — body; yena — by which; bhū-bhāraḥ — the earth’s burden; kṣapitaḥ — was removed.
Translation
Just as Bhagavān assumes and relinquishes forms such as that of a fish [the Matsya avatāra] in the manner of a stage actor, so too, He withdrew that very body by which the earth’s burden was removed.
