तदाहरेवाप्रतिबुद्धचेतसामभद्रहेतुः कलिरन्ववर्तत ॥ ३६ ॥
jahau sva-tanvā śravaṇīya-sat-kathaḥ
tadāhar evāpratibuddha-cetasām
abhadra-hetuḥ kalir anvavartata

yadā — when; bhagavān — Bhagavān; mukundaḥ — Mukunda [Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who appears in order to liberate His devotees (bhaktānāṁ mukti-dānārtham avatīrṇaḥ)208]; sat-kathaḥ — [whose] sacred narrations; śravaṇīya — are worthy to be heard [śravaṇārhā satī209]; jahau — left; imām — this; mahīm — earth; sva-tanvā — by way of His own body [employing His body as the instrument of His departure, and not that He gave up the earth “along with His body” (tyāgo’tra sva-tanu-karaṇaka iti na tu sva-tanvā saheti vyākhyeyam);210 because of His ascent to Vaikuṇṭha along with His own body (satanor eva vaikuṇṭhārohāt)211]; tadā ahaḥ eva — on that very day [tasmin eva ahani212]; kaliḥ — Kali; abhadra-hetuḥ — the cause of unrighteousness [adharma-hetuḥ]; aprati-buddha-cetasām — in those of unawakened discernment [(avivekinām), meaning that it has no influence over those of developed discernment (vivekināṁ tu na prabhur ity uktam)]; anvavartata — made its full-fledged appearance [although having already previously entered in part, Kali then followed along in its own form. This is the implied sense here of the verb anu-vṛt, “to follow after” (anvavartateti pūrvam evāṁśena praviṣṭasya svena rūpeṇānuvṛttir uktā).].
Translation
When Bhagavān Mukunda [Śrī Kṛṣṇa], whose sacred narrations are worthy to be heard, left this earth by way of His own body, on that very day, Kali, the cause of unrighteousness in those of unawakened discernment, made its full-fledged appearance.
