अलब्धमानोऽवज्ञातः किं वा तात चिरोषितः ॥ ३९ ॥
alabdha-māno’vajñātaḥ kiṁ vā tāta ciroṣitaḥ
Synonyms
[In the following six verses, Yudhiṣṭhira now inquires about the well-being of Arjuna himself (idānīṁ tasyaiva kuśalaṁ pṛcchati kaccid iti ṣaḍbhiḥ).139 He does so while imagining the cause of Arjuna’s outwardly apparent dejection (tasya nistejaskatvādi-hetūn vikalpyan pṛcchati).140]; kaccit — is; anāmayam — healthiness [lit., “the state of freedom from disease” (ārogyam); or well-being (sukham)141]; te — yours [tava142]; tāta143 — my dear brother; vibhāsi — [you] seem; me — to me [to my vision itself (mama dṛṣṭir eva)]; bhraṣṭa-tejāḥ — to have lost your luster; [yataḥ] ciroṣitaḥ — [because] you were staying abroad so long [bahu-kālaṁ tatra sthitaḥ]; tāta — my dear; kim — did; alabdha-mānaḥ — [you] not receive proper honor [from your relatives (bandhubhyaḥ sakāśāt); which pains the heart (antas-tāpe hetuḥ)144]; [kim] vā — or were [you]; [on the other hand (pratyuta)]; avajñātaḥ — disrespected [tiraskṛtaḥ]; [by them (taiḥ); because disrespect occurs when one resides in the house of one’s father-in-law for a long time (śvasura-gṛhe bahu-kāla-vāse avajñā bhavati)145].
Translation
Are you well, my dear brother? You seem to me to have lost your luster. Because you were staying abroad so long, my dear, did you not receive proper honor [from your relatives], or were you disrespected [by them]?
