न दत्तमुक्तमर्थिभ्य आशया यत्प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥ ४० ॥
na dattam uktam arthibhya āśayā yat pratiśrutam
Synonyms
na kaccit — were you not [meaning, were you perhaps (kim)146]; abhihataḥ — wounded [tāḍitaḥ]; amaṅgalaiḥ — by harsh [paruśaiḥ]; śabda-ādibhiḥ — words; abhāvaiḥ — devoid of love [prema-śūnyaiḥ]; [or (yad vā)147]; na dattam [kim] — [were you] unable to deliver; yat — that which; [datum] pratiśrutam — [you] had promised to give [when you pledged, “I will give you as per your wish” (tathā dāsyāmīti pratijñātam)]; arthibhyaḥ — to those appealing for your help [yācamānebhyaḥ]; āśayā — with the particular hopes they each cherished [āśayā saha yathā āśā bhavati]; [or (yad vā)]; na uktam [kim] — did you not speak [to assure them, “I will grant you this” (tebhyo dāsyāmīti noktam ity anvayaḥ); remaining completely silent instead (maunaṁ kṛtam iti bhāvaḥ)148].
Translation
Were you not wounded by harsh words devoid of love? Were you unable to deliver that which you had promised to give to those appealing for your help with the particular hopes they each cherished? Or did you not speak [to assure them, remaining completely silent instead]?
