इमे जनपदा ग्रामाः पुरोद्यानाकराश्रमाः ।
भ्रष्टश्रियो निरानन्दाः किमघं दर्शयन्ति नः ॥ २० ॥
ime jana-padā grāmāḥ purodyānākarāśramāḥ
bhraṣṭa-śriyo nirānandāḥ kim aghaṁ darśayanti naḥ
Synonyms
daivatāni — the deities [deva pratimāḥ71]; hi72 — certainly; [dṛśyante] iva — [appear] as if; rudanti — to cry; svidyanti — perspire [from their bodily pores (gātra-prasvedaṁ muñcanti)]; ca — and; uccalanti — shake [as though jumping up and down (utplutya patantīva); or move from their fixed locations (deśāntare gacchanti)73]; ime — these; jana-padāḥ — districts [particular regions under the jurisdiction of the state capitals (tad-āśrayāḥ deśa-viśeṣāḥ)74]; grāmāḥ — villages; pura — cities [state capitals (rāja-dhānyaḥ)]; udyāna — gardens [vāṭikāḥ]; ākara — mines [of gold and other precious metals (suvarṇādy udgama-sthānāni)]; āśramāḥ — [and] hermitages [of sages (muni-jana-nivāsa-sthānāni)]; bhraṣṭa — [are] devoid of; śriyaḥ — beauty; nirānandāḥ — [and] bereft of delight; kim — what; agham — evil [or misery (duḥkham)]; darśayanti — might they signify; naḥ — to us [asmākam]; [this we do not know (vayaṁ tu na vidma iti bhāvaḥ)].
Translation
The deities certainly appear as if to cry, perspire, and move [from their fixed locations]. These districts, villages, cities, gardens, mines, and hermitages are devoid of beauty and bereft of delight. What evil might they signify to us?
