रुदन्त्यश्रुमुखा गावो न हृष्यन्त्यृषभा व्रजे ॥ १९ ॥
rudanty aśru-mukhā gāvo na hṛṣyanty ṛṣabhā vraje
Synonyms
vatsāḥ — the calves; na pibanti — do not drink; stanam — [milk (stanyam) from68] their mothers’ udders; [even though hungry (kṣudhitā api)69]; ca — and; mātaraḥ — [their] mothers [the milk cows (gāvaḥ)]; na duhyanti — do not allow themselves to be milked [(na prasnuvanti);70 meaning that they do not yield milk for their calves (vatsān prati na duhyanti stanyam iti śeṣaḥ)]; gāvaḥ — the cows; rudanti — cry; aśru-mukhāḥ — with faces covered in tears [āśrūṇi mukhe yāsāṁ tāḥ]; ṛṣabhāḥ — [and] the bulls; na hṛṣyanti — no longer rejoice; vraje — in the pasturing ground [goṣṭhe].
Translation
The calves do not drink milk from their mothers’ udders and their mothers do not allow their calves to drink their milk. The cows cry with faces covered in tears and the bulls no longer rejoice in the pasturing ground.
