हिमालयं न्यस्तदण्डप्रहर्षं मनस्विनामिव सत्सम्प्रहारः ॥ २९ ॥
himālayaṁ nyasta-daṇḍa-praharṣaṁ manasvinām iva sat samprahāraḥ
Synonyms
[Gāndhārī96]; sādhvī — the chaste [or virtuous (suśīlā)]; putrī — daughter; subalasya — of King Subala; pati-vratā ca — [who was] devoted to her husband; anujagāma — followed; patim — [her] husband; prayāntam — as he was leaving; himālayam — for the Himālayas; [and why would she, of particularly tender disposition (kathaṁ sā sukumārī), undertake such a journey that is fraught with numerous difficulties? (himādi duḥkha-bahulaṁ himavantaṁ gatā). This is now answered in the second half of the verse (ata āha)]; praharṣam — [which are] the foremost delight [(prakṛṣṭo harṣo yasmiṁs tam);97 meaning that although they entail hardship, the Himālayas are the cause of delight for certain individuals in some particular manner (duḥkhadam api kathañcit keṣāñcit praharṣa-hetur bhavati)]; nyasta-daṇḍa — [of] renunciants [(sannyāsinām); lit., those who have relinquished (nyasta, i.e., tyakta) the rod of chastisement (daṇḍa), or hostility toward other living beings (bhūta-droha), and who are thus unconditional friends to all (sarva-bhūta-suhṛdām)98]; iva — just as; sat — a righteous; samprahāraḥ — battle [yuddham]; [is the foremost delight (praharṣam)99]; manasvinām — [of] valiant warriors [(śūrāṇām), who are chivalrous in battle even from the most tender age (parama-sukumārāṇām api yuddha-vīrāṇām)100].
Translation
Gāndhārī, the chaste daughter of King Subala, who was devoted to her husband, followed him as he was leaving for the Himālayas, which are the foremost delight of renunciants, just as a righteous battle is the foremost delight of valiant warriors.
