इतोऽर्वाक्प्रायशः कालः पुंसां गुणविकर्षणः ॥ २७ ॥
ito’rvāk prāyaśaḥ kālaḥ puṁsāṁ guṇa-vikarṣaṇaḥ
Synonyms
[In the verse that follows, Vidura instructs Dhṛtarāṣṭra: “You, however, are not priorly a narottama, therefore you should now become a dhīra” (tvam tu pūrvaṁ narottamo mābhūḥ ata idānīṁ dhīro bhavet).85]; atha — therefore [or immediately hereafter (anantaraṁ śīghram eva)86]; gatiḥ — [with your] movements; ajñāta — unknown; svaiḥ — to your relatives [jñātibhiḥ87]; bhavān — you; yātu — should leave; udīcīm — for the northern; diśam — direction; itaḥ — henceforth; arvāk — in the impending future [arvācīnaḥ eṣyan]; kālaḥ — time; prāyaśaḥ — for the most part; vikarṣaṇaḥ — will steal away [ācchinatti]; guṇa — the virtues [such as fortitude and compassion (dhairya-dayādīn)]; puṁsām — of human beings.
Translation
Therefore, with your movements unknown to your relatives, you should leave for the north. Henceforth, in the impending future, time for the most part will steal away the virtues of human beings.
