paraity anicchato jīrṇo jarayā vāsasī iva
Synonyms
ayam — this; dehaḥ — body; tava — of yours; jijīviṣoḥ — who hanker still to live [jīvitum icchatoḥ72]; tasya api — in spite of your; kṛpaṇasya — felt sense of pettiness [evaṁ dainyam anubhavato’pi73]; paraiti — is dwindling [kṣīyate74]; jarayā — due to old age; anicchataḥ — against your will; iva — like; jīrṇaḥ — worn out; vāsasī — under and outer garments [(antarīyottarīye iti), here by using the dual case ending “ī” in the example of worn out garments, what is implied is the deterioration (jīrṇatvam) of both the subtle (sūkṣma) and gross (sthūla) divisions of the body. Deterioration of the subtle body is indicated by blindness, deafness, and so on (āndha-vādhiryādikam), whereas deterioration of the gross body is indicated by the need to rely on other’s offerings for one’s maintenance (balī-palitādikam)75].
Translation
This body of yours, who hanker still to live in spite of your felt sense of pettiness, is dwindling due to old age against your will, like worn out under and outer garments.
