आत्मा च जरया ग्रस्तः परगेहमुपाससे ॥ २१ ॥
ātmā ca jarayā grastaḥ para-geham upāsase
Synonyms
[After pointing out the pettiness of lingering in household affairs (in the last two and a half verses), Vidura now endeavors to awaken detachment in Dhṛtarāṣṭra in seven verses beginning with the following (atrāvasthāne dainya-mati darśayan vairāgyam utpādayati pitṛ-bhrātriti saptabhiḥ).52]; te — your [tava53]; pitṛ — uncle [Bhīṣma54]; bhrātṛ — brothers [and cousins, such as Bhūriśravā]; suhṛt — friends [and allies, such as Śalya]; putrāḥ — [and] sons [headed by Duryodhana]; hatāḥ — have all been killed [mṛtāḥ55]; vayam — the prime of your life [yauvanam56]; vigatam — has slipped away [apagatam57]; ca — and; ātmā — [your] body [dehaḥ]; grastaḥ — is stricken; jarayā — with old age; [yet in spite of this (yadyapy evaṁ tathāpi)]; upāsase — you reside [merely for the sake of your livelihood (jīvanārtham); like a household dog (gṛha-pāla-vat)58]; para-geham — [in] another’s house [in the house of your enemies (śatrūṇāṁ geham)].
Translation
Your uncle, brothers, friends, and sons have all been killed, the prime of your life has slipped away, and your body is stricken with old age, yet in spite of this, you reside in another’s house.
