हित्वेदं नृप गङ्गायां यास्यत्यद्धाकुतोभयम् ॥ २८ ॥
hitvedaṁ nṛpa gaṅgāyāṁ yāsyaty addhākutobhayam
Synonyms
nṛpa — O King; jijñāsita — having inquired into [and reflected upon (vicāritam)76]; ātma-yāthārthyaḥ — the ontological truth of the Self [(ātmano yathārthyaṁ vāstavaṁ tattvam); where the word ātmā refers specifically to Hari (ity atra ātmā harir eva)77]; muneḥ — from the sage [Śuka]; vyāsa-sutāt — the son of Vyāsa; asau — he; hitvā — will give up [tyaktvā78]; idam — this [body (śarīram)]; gaṅgāyām — on the bank of the Gaṅgā; addhā — [and] directly [(sākṣāt), by way of a transcendental or divine body (divya-svarūpeṇa);79 or certainly (niścayena)80]; yāsyati — attain; akutaḥ-bhayam [padam81] — the state of freedom from all fear [meaning liberation characterized as the manifestation of the bliss of constitutional being (svarūpānandāvirbhāva-lakṣaṇaṁ mokṣam);82 or Bhagavān Himself, in the presence of whom, all fear including even that of time’s influence simply does not exist (nāsti kālādibhyo’pi bhayaṁ yatra taṁ bhagavantam)83].
Translation
O King, having inquired into the ontological truth of the Self from sage Śuka, the son of Vyāsa, he will give up his body on the bank of the Gaṅgā and directly attain the state of freedom from all fear.
