SB 1.12.15–16
एष ह्यस्मिन्प्रजातन्तौ पुरूणां पौरवर्षभ ॥ १५ ॥
दैवेनाप्रतिघातेन शुक्ले संस्थामुपेयुषि ।
रातो वोऽनुग्रहार्थाय विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना ॥ १६ ॥
eṣa hy asmin prajā-tantau purūṇāṁ pauravarṣabha
daivenāpratighātena śukle saṁsthām upeyuṣi
rāto vo’nugrahārthāya viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā
Synonyms
tuṣṭāḥ — being pleased [with the offering of gold and other items (hiraṇyādibhis tuṣṭāḥ)43]; brāhmaṇāḥ — the brāhmaṇas; ūcuḥ — spoke [as follows]; tam rājānam — to the king; praśraya-anvitam — who was endowed with humility [vinayena ānataṁ namram]; paurava-ṛṣabha — O foremost of the Pauravas; asmin — [when] this; śukle — pure [śuddhe]; prajā-tantau — race; purūṇām — of the Purus [pūru-vaṁśyānām]; saṁsthām upeyuṣi — was about to be destroyed [nāśaṁ prāpte sati]; apratighātena — by the indomitable [pratihati rahitena]; daivena — will of providence [by the unjust decree of fate (dura-dṛṣṭena)]; eṣaḥ hi — this very child [śiśuḥ]; rātaḥ — was given [dattaḥ]; vaḥ — to you [yuṣmākam]; anugraha-arthāya — out of grace; prabhaviṣṇunā — by the almighty [by He whose very nature gives rise to all events (prabhavana-śīlena)44]; viṣṇunā — Viṣṇu.
Translation
Being pleased with these gifts, the brāhmaṇas spoke as follows to the king, who was endowed with humility: O foremost of the Pauravas, when this pure race of the Purus was about to be destroyed by the indomitable will of providence, this very child was given to you out of grace by the almighty Viṣṇu.
