Synonyms
saḥ vai — He indeed [the Primeval Puruṣa]; ayam — is this [Śrī Kṛṣṇa72]; yat — whose; padam — essential being [(svarūpam), or whose feet (aṅghrim)]; sūrayaḥ — the mystic sages [kavayaḥ]; jita-indriyāḥ — who have conquered their senses; nirjita-mātariśvanaḥ — [and] regulated their life force [nirjitaḥ mātariśvā prāṇo yaiḥ te]; paśyanti — directly intuit; atra — here in this world; amala-ātmanā — by their purified intellective faculty [amalaḥ yaḥ ātmā buddhiḥ tena]; utkalita — blooming [or longingly incited (utkaṅṭhita)]; bhakti — [through] devotion; nanu — certainly [O sakhī]; eṣaḥ [eva] — He alone [Śrī Kṛṣṇa, and not the practice of yoga and so on]; arhati — is able; parimārṣṭum — to completely cleanse [samyak śodhayitum]; sattvam — the heart [or the intellective faculty (buddhim)]; [alternatively, the last line can be interpreted as follows, with addition of the negative particle na before arhati: “It is certainly not becoming of Him (nanu eṣaḥ na arhati) to wipe clean (parimārṣṭum, i.e., nāśayitum) our awareness (sattvam, i.e., jñānam) of Him by going far away and thus disappearing from our vision (dur-gamanena apratyakṣī-bhavitum). Thus, we must certainly go along with Him (anena saha eva gantavyam)”].
Translation
He indeed [the Primeval Puruṣa] is this Śrī Kṛṣṇa, whose essential being the mystic sages, who have conquered their senses and regulated their life force, directly intuit here in this world by their purified intellective faculty, longingly incited through devotion. Certainly, [O sakhī], He alone [Śrī Kṛṣṇa] is able to completely cleanse the heart.
