युधिष्ठिरस्तदाकर्ण्य शयानं शरपञ्जरे ।
अपृच्छद्विविधान्धर्मानृषीणां चानुशृण्वताम् ॥ २५ ॥
yudhiṣṭhiras tad ākarṇya śayānaṁ śara-pañjare
apṛcchad vividhān dharmān ṛṣīṇāṁ cānuśṛṇvatām
Synonyms
sūtaḥ — Śrī Sūta; uvāca — said; ākarṇya — hearing; tat — this [these sympathetic words of Bhīṣma (sānukampaṁ vākyam);81 (śrī bhīṣmasya vacanam)82]; yudhiṣṭhiraḥ — Yudhiṣṭhira; apṛcchat — questioned; śayānam — [Bhīṣma] as he lay; śara-pañjare — on a net of arrows; vividhān — regarding many different; dharmān — moral and religious duties; ṛṣīṇām — [in the presence] of the sages; anuśṛṇvatām ca — who were also listening attentively to their dialogue [tayoḥ saṁvāda-śravaṇa-parā jātā83].
Translation
Śrī Sūta said: Hearing this, Yudhiṣṭhira questioned Bhīṣma as he lay on a bed of arrows regarding many different moral and religious duties (dharmas) in the presence of the sages, who were also listening attentively to their dialogue.
