भूतहत्यां तथैवैकां न यज्ञैर्मार्ष्टुमर्हति ॥ ५२ ॥
bhūta-hatyāṁ tathaivaikāṁ na yajñair mārṣṭum arhati
Synonyms
yathā — just as; paṅka-ambhaḥ — muddy water [paṅkena paṅkāmbhaḥ208]; [cannot be purified (na mṛjyate)]; paṅkena — by mud; vā — or; [as (yathā)]; surā-kṛtam — the impurity of a surface touched by liquor [surā-leśa-kṛtam apāvitryam]; [cannot be cleansed (na mṛjyate)]; surayā — by liquor [even by a great quantity of liquor (bahvyā surayā)]; tathā eva — so too; na [ko’pi209] — no one at all; arhati — is able; mārṣṭum — to purify himself [śodhayitum]; ekām bhūta-hatyām — from the sin of murdering even a single living being; [carried out in a state of frenzy (pramādato jātām)]; yajñaiḥ — by sacrifices [involving intentional use of violence (buddhi-pūrvaka-hiṁsā prāyaiḥ)].
Translation
Just as muddy water cannot be purified by mud, or as the impurity of a surface touched by liquor cannot be cleansed by liquor, so too, no one at all can purify himself from the sin of murdering even a single living being by sacrifices [involving intentional use of violence].
