कर्मभिर्गृहमेधीयैर्नाहं कल्पो व्यपोहितुम् ॥ ५१ ॥
karmabhir gṛhamedhīyair nāhaṁ kalpo vyapohitum
Synonyms
[Let us admit, for the sake of argument, that the killing of men in battle was an act of dharma (kiṁ ca yuddhe puṁsāṁ vadho bhavatu nāma dharmaḥ). Yet (tu)207]; karmabhiḥ [api] — [even] by performing the sacrifices; gṛhamedhīyaiḥ — prescribed for a householder [gṛhāśrama-vihitaiḥ]; aham — I; na kalpaḥ — shall not be able [na samarthaḥ]; vyapohitum — to atone for [to counteract (apākartum)]; asau — that [tam]; drohaḥ — hostility; yaḥ — which; [although ordained (anuddiṣṭo’pi)]; utthitaḥ — has been inflicted; strīṇām — upon the women; hata-bandhūnām — whose relatives have been killed; mat — by me [mayā]; iha — in battle [yuddhe].
Translation
Even by performing the sacrifices prescribed for a householder, I shall not be able to atone for the hostility that I have inflicted upon the women whose relatives have been killed by me in battle.
