SB 1.8.3–4
गान्धारीं पुत्रशोकार्तां पृथां कृष्णां च माधवः ॥ ३ ॥
सान्त्वयामास मुनिभिर्हतबन्धूञ्शुचार्पितान् ।
भूतेषु कालस्य गतिं दर्शयन्न प्रतिक्रियाम् ॥ ४ ॥
gāndhārīṁ putra-śokārtāṁ pṛthāṁ kṛṣṇāṁ ca mādhavaḥ
sāntvayām āsa munibhir hata-bandhūñ śucārpitān
bhūteṣu kālasya gatiṁ darśayann apratikriyām
Synonyms
darśayan — [by] pointing out; apratikriyām — the inexorable [or inevitable (nivarttakopāya-rahitām)6]; gatim — passage [or movement, precipitating the arising and ceasing of all events (utpatti-vināśa-nimitta-bhūtānāṁ pravṛttim)]; kālasya — of time; bhūteṣu — upon all living beings; mādhavaḥ — Mādhava [Śrī Kṛṣṇa]; munibhiḥ [saha7] — along with the sages [through the medium of the sages (munibhir dvāra-bhūtaiḥ)8]; sāntvayāmāsa — consoled; kuru-patim — the king of the Kurus [Yudhiṣṭhira9]; saha-anujam — together with his younger brothers [Bhīma and the others (bhīmādibhiḥ sahitam)10]; dhṛtarāṣṭram — Dhṛtarāṣṭra; gāndhārīm — [and his wife (bhāryām)] Gāndhārī; śoka-artām — [who was] grief-stricken; putra — [at the loss of her] sons; pṛthām — [as well as] Kuntī; ca — and; kṛṣṇām — Draupadī; āsīnam — all of whom were seated [upaviṣṭam11]; tatra — there [on the bank of the Gaṅgā (gaṅgā-tire)]; śucārpitān — [and] plunged into bereavement [śokenārpitān vyāptān]; hata-bandhūn — for their lost relatives.
Translation
By pointing out the inexorable passage of time upon all living beings, Mādhava, along with the sages, consoled King Yudhiṣṭhira together with his younger brothers, Dhṛtarāṣṭra and his wife Gāndhārī, who was grief-stricken at the loss of her sons, as well as Kuntī and Draupadī, all of whom were seated there and plunged into bereavement for their lost relatives.
