SB 1.7.40

एवं परीक्षता धर्मं पार्थः कृष्णेन चोदितः ।
नैच्छद्धन्तुं गुरुसुतं यद्यप्यात्महनं महान् ॥ ४० ॥
evaṁ parīkṣatā dharmaṁ pārthaḥ kṛṣṇena coditaḥ
naicchad dhantuṁ guru-sutaṁ yadyapy ātma-hanaṁ mahān

Synonyms

yadyapi — although; coditaḥ — prompted; evam — in this manner; kṛṣṇena — by Kṛṣṇa; parīkṣatā — who was testing; dharmam — [his] moral sense; pārthaḥ — the son of Pṛthā, Arjuna; mahān — being of noble character [(yato mahān);154 or because he was keenly aware of the implicit nature of Kṛṣṇa (kṛṣṇasya svabhāvābhijñaḥ), who although personally omniscient (svayaṁ sarvajño’pi), tests His devotees so as to proclaim their fixity in dharma (dharmādi-niṣṭhā khyāpanāya tad-vato bhaktān parīkṣata iti)155]; na aicchat — did not wish; hantum — to kill; guru-sutam — the son of his guru; ātma-hanam [api] — [even though] he was the killer of his sons [putra-hantāram api].

Translation

Although prompted in this manner by Kṛṣṇa, who was testing his moral sense, Arjuna, being of noble character, did not wish to kill his guru’s son, even though the latter had murdered his own sons.
