आहरिष्ये शिरस्तस्य यस्ते मानिनि पुत्रहा ॥ ३८ ॥
āhariṣye śiras tasya yas te mānini putra-hā
Synonyms
[the pledge (pratijñā)149]; pratiśrutam — that was promised; bhavatā — by you; pāñcālyai — to Draupadī; mānini — O respected lady; āhariṣye — I shall deliver [āneṣyāmi]; [to you (tubhyam)]; śiraḥ — the head; tasya — of the one; yaḥ — who; te putra-hā — [is] the slayer of your sons; śṛṇvataḥ ca — was also heard; mama — by Me; [Yet without killing him, how will your promise be fulfilled? (tad api tad-vadhaṁ vinā kathaṁ siddhayet iti śeṣeṇānvayaḥ). It would thus be fitting for you to kill him (asya vadha ucitaḥ), otherwise you will be guilty of the fault of not honoring your vow (anyathā tava-pratijñā-hāni-lakṣaṇo doṣaḥ syāt).]
Translation
I also heard you promise to Draupadī, “O respected lady, I shall deliver you the head of the man who has slain your sons.”
