बबन्धामर्षताम्राक्षः पशुं रशनया यथा ॥ ३३ ॥
babandhāmarṣa-tāmrākṣaḥ paśuṁ raśanayā yathā
Synonyms
tataḥ — then [after retracting the fire of the two missiles within himself (svasmin tejo-dvaya-saṅkramaṇānantaram)129]; amarṣa-tāmra-akṣaḥ — Arjuna, whose eyes were red with anger [amarṣeṇa kopena tāmre akṣiṇī yasya saḥ]; tarasā — swiftly [(śīghram);130 or forcibly (balena)131]; āsādya — bore down upon [(samīpaṁ gatvā);132 (samīpam etya);133 (nikaṭe gatvā)134]; dāruṇam — the cruel [ugram135]; gautamī-sutam — son of Gautamī [she who was born in the Gautama dynasty and also known as Kṛpī (gautama-vaṁśājātā gautamī kṛpī)136]; babandha — [and] bound [him]; raśanayā — with a rope; yathā — like; paśum — an animal [here, the illustration is in regard to the common element of cruelty (niṣkṛpatve dṛṣṭāntaḥ), implying that it was morally justified to bind Aśvatthāmā just as one would a cruel animal (paśuṁ yatheti tasya bandhanaṁ dharma ity artha eva), or that he was bound like an animal marked for religious sacrifice (vā dṛṣṭāntaḥ yathā yājñika-paśum iti)].
Translation
Then, Arjuna, his eyes red with anger, swiftly bore down upon Aśvatthāmā, the cruel son of Gautamī, and bound him with a rope like an animal.
