सर्वतो मुखमायाति तेजः परमदारुणम् ॥ २६ ॥
sarvato mukham āyāti tejaḥ parama-dāruṇam
Synonyms
[Having eulogized Kṛṣṇa in this manner, Arjuna now submits the following inquiry (evaṁ stutvā prastutaṁ vijñāpayati kim).106]; deva-deva — O God of gods [here, Arjuna addresses Kṛṣṇa as such because His feet are worshiped by all the gods, thereby implying His omniscience (sarva-devārādhita-caraṇatvena sarvajñatvād ity āśayena)107]; aham — I; na vedmi — do not know [na jānāmi]; kim svit — what [the word svit (a particle of interrogation) is used here in the sense of conjecture (svid vitarke)108]; idam — this; parama — most; dāruṇam — terrible [or exceedingly terrifying (ati-bhayaṅkaram)]; tejaḥ — fire; sarvataḥ mukham — that is spreading in all directions could be [I do not know what its fundamental constitution is (kim ātmakam idam)109]; vā iti — or; kutaḥ — from whence [from what cause (kuto vā hetoḥ)]; āyāti — it ensues [(āgacchati), or how it can be mitigated (kutaś ca śamiṣyati ity arthaḥ)110].
Translation
O God of gods, I do not know what this most terrible fire— that is spreading in all directions— could be or from whence it ensues.
