ईशस्य हि वशे लोको योषा दारुमयी यथा ॥ ७ ॥
īśasya hi vaśe loko yoṣā dārumayī yathā
Synonyms
asvatantrā — being dependent on others; sā — she; āsīt — was; na kalpā — unable [na samarthāsīt24]; [to procure (tat-tat-sampādane)25]; mama — my; yoga-kṣemam — needs and security [where the word yoga means the attainment of what was previously unobtained (alabdha-lābho yogaḥ) and the word kṣemam means the protection of what is already at hand (labdhasya parirakṣaṇaṁ kṣemaḥ)26]; icchatī — [although] wishing [to do so]; [what is indicated by her status as a maidservant is her dependence on others from the ordinary worldly perspective (laukika-dṛṣṭyā tu pāratantryaṁ kiṅkarīty anenaiva sūcitam), whereas, from the perspective of ultimate reality (paramārtha-dṛṣṭyā)27]; [sarvo’pi28] lokaḥ — the entire world; vaśe — [is] under the control [adhīnaḥ29]; īśasya hi — of Īśvara alone; yathā — just as; dāru-mayī — a wooden [kāṣṭha]; yoṣā — woman [a female figurine or puppet (puttalikā)]; [is controlled by a puppeteer (pranarttaka-puruṣādhīnā tathā)].
Translation
Being dependent on others, she was unable to procure my needs and security, although wishing to do so. The entire world is under the control of Īśvara alone, just as a wooden puppet [is controlled by a puppeteer].
