न ह्येष व्यवधात्काल एष सर्वनिराकृतिः ॥ ४ ॥
na hy eṣa vyavadhāt kāla eṣa sarva-nirākṛtiḥ
Synonyms
muni-sattama — O greatest of sages; hi — since [yataḥ10]; eṣaḥ — this; kālaḥ — insurmountable time [characterized as ultimate cessation (anta lakṣaṇaḥ kālaḥ)]; sarva-nirākṛtiḥ — [is] the destroyer of all things [(sarva-vināśakaḥ);11 that by which all things are negated (sarvasya nirākṛtiḥ apalāpo yasmāt saḥ)]; [how did (katham)]; eṣaḥ — it; na vyavadhāt — not obstruct [or annihilate (na khaṇḍitavān)]; te — your [tava12]; smṛtim — memory; viṣayām — concerning; etām — these events [such as receiving instructions from the mendicants (bhikṣūpadeśa-prāptām)13]; prāk-kalpa — [in] the previous day of Brahmā [atīta-brahma-kalpa-viṣayām14].
Translation
O greatest of sages, since this insurmountable time is the destroyer of all things, how did it not obstruct your memory concerning these events in the previous day of Brahmā?
