मत्कामः शनकैः साधु सर्वान्मुञ्चति हृच्छयान् ॥ २३ ॥
mat-kāmaḥ śanakaiḥ sādhu sarvān muñcati hṛc-chayān
Synonyms
[Why then was a vision granted to Nārada in the first place? (kutas tarhi dṛṣṭo’si).88]; anagha — O sinless one; rūpam — the form; [of Mine (mama)89]; yat — which; darśitam — has been shown; te — to you [tubhyam90]; sakṛt — just once; etat — this [single vision (ekavāra-darśanam) is sufficient to provoke your longing for Me (tan-manorathaṁ sādhayituṁ yogyam ity arthaḥ), and not repeated disclosures (na tu muhur darśanam)91]; kāmāya — [is] to arouse your longing [to incite your love for Me (mayi anurāgāya);92 meaning that if the devotee’s longing is insufficiently intensified, then prema also remains undeveloped, in which case love is without youthful vibrancy (autkaṇṭhasyānati-vṛddhyā premno’py anati-vṛddhes tasya tāruṇyaṁ na syād)]; sādhuḥ — an authentic seeker; mat-kāmaḥ — who longs for Me [who simply longs for Me, in spite of not having attained the vision of Me (yo hi māṁ kāmayate mātraṁ mad-darśanālābhe’pīty arthaḥ)]; śanakaiḥ — gradually; muñcati — forsakes [or casts out (nirasyati)93]; sarvān — all; hṛt-śayān [kāmān94] — [desires] lying in the heart [desires for something other than Me (anya vāsanāḥ);95 the subconscious predispositions toward sense objects (viṣaya-vāsanāḥ)].
Translation
O sinless one, I have shown My form to you just once to arouse your longing for Me. An authentic seeker who longs for Me gradually forsakes all other desires lying in the heart.
