तथापि शोचस्यात्मानमकृतार्थ इव प्रभो ॥ ४ ॥
tathāpi śocasy ātmānam akṛtārtha iva prabho
Synonyms
[moreover (kiñca)9]; tat — that; yat — which; [is known as]; sanātanam — the eternal [nityam]; brahma — Brahman [in Its all-pervading unqualified aspect (vyāpakaṁ nirviśeṣa-svarūpam)10]; jijñāsitam — has been inquired into [deliberated upon (vicāritam), by way of setting forth the Vedānta-sūtra (vedānta-sūtra-karaṇaiḥ)11]; ca — and; adhītam — attained [(adhigataṁ prāptañ ca); not only inquired into but also brought within the scope of immediate experience (na kevalaṁ jijñāsitam eva apitu adhītam avagatam anubhava-gocarī kṛtam)12]; [by you (tvayā)]; tathāpi — and yet [in spite of being thus accomplished (kṛta-kṛto’pi)13]; prabho — O illustrious one [you who are competent in all respects (sarvathā samarthaḥ)14]; śocasi — you lament; ātmānam — for yourself; akṛta-arthaḥ iva — as if having failed to attain your objective [akṛta-kṛtya iva15]; [what is the cause of this? (tat kim artham iti śeṣaḥ)].
Translation
Moreover, you have also inquired into and attained that which is known as the eternal Brahman, and yet, O illustrious one, you lament for yourself as if having failed to attain your objective. [What is the cause of this?]
