त एवात्मविनाशाय कल्पन्ते कल्पिताः परे ॥ ३४ ॥
ta evātma-vināśāya kalpante kalpitāḥ pare
Synonyms
evam — in the same manner [tathā144]; sarve — all; kriyā-yogāḥ — actions [all karma-yoga, including regular prescribed duties, duties ordained for the fulfillment of particular desires, and occasional duties (karma-yogāḥ sarve nityāḥ kāmyāḥ naimittikāś ca)145]; nṛṇām — of human beings; hetavaḥ — [are] the causes; saṁsṛti — [of] the perpetuation of material existence [saṁsāra]; [yet (kintu)]; te eva — those very [actions (kriyā-yogāḥ)]; kalpitāḥ — [if] offered [without any material motive (niṣkāmāḥ samarpitāḥ santaḥ)]; pare — to the Supreme Absolute [parameśvare]; kalpante — become capable [samarthā bhavanti]; ātma-vināśāya — of destroying the very essence of the bondage to action [(karma-nivṛtaye); the word ātmā here is meant in the sense of “the essence of the drive toward conditional action” (ātma śabdo’tra karma-jāti-paraḥ)146].
Translation
In the same manner, all actions performed by human beings are the causes of the perpetuation of material existence. Yet, those very actions, if offered [without any material motive] to the Supreme Absolute, become capable of destroying the very essence of the bondage to action.147
