व्यदधाद्यज्ञसन्तत्यै वेदमेकं चतुर्विधम् ॥ १९ ॥
vyadadhād yajña-santatyai vedam ekaṁ catur-vidham
Synonyms
vīkṣya — having observed; vaidikam — [that] the Vedic; karma — rituals; cātuḥ hotram — [enacted] via the four types of priests [(catvāra ṛtvijaś catur-hotāraḥ tair anustheyam);81 namely, hotā, udgātā, adhvaryu, and brahmā82]; śuddham — [are] purifying [śuddhi-karam]; prajānām — for people in general [who are ineligible for the paths of jñāna, yoga, and bhakti (jñāna-yoga-bhakti ayogyānām)83]; [he, Vyāsa]; vyadadhāt — divided; vedam ekam — the one Veda; catuḥ-vidham — into four divisions; yajña-santatyai — for the perpetuation of sacrificial rites [to prevent their discontinuation (yajñānām avicchedāya)].
Translation
Having observed that the Vedic rituals enacted via the four types of priests are purifying for people in general, he [Vyāsa] divided the one Veda into four divisions for the perpetuation of sacrificial rites (yajña).
