एतन्नानावताराणां निधानं बीजमव्ययम् ।
यस्यांशांशेन सृज्यन्ते देवतिर्यङ्नरादयः ॥ ५ ॥
etan nānāvatārāṇāṁ nidhānaṁ bījam avyayam
yasyāṁśāṁśena sṛjyante deva-tiryaṅ-narādayaḥ

Synonyms

etat — this [form of the second Puruṣa, Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, situated within the universe (brahmāṇḍa-stham)18]; nidhānam — [is] the repository [the eternal refuge (sadaivāśrayaḥ), as the ocean is for all smaller bodies of water (sarovarāṇāṁ samudra iva);19 or the treasure house (nidhiraṁ śrī-bhūtam)20]; avyayam — [and] the imperishable [inexhaustible (anapakṣayam);21 or eternal (nityam)22]; bījam — seed [and in this respect, unlike other seeds (bījatve’pi nānya bīja-tulyam), being the abode of origination (bījam udgama-sthānam)23]; nānā — [of] the innumerable; avatārāṇām — divine descents of God [and not only of them but of all living beings as well, as now stated (na kevalam avatārāṇām eva bījaṁ kintu sarva prāṇinām)]; aṁśena — by the portions [referring to Marīci and other sages]; aṁśa — [of] the portion [Brahmā]; yasya — of whom; deva — the gods; ādayaḥ — other evolved beings [those predominated by sattva (sāttvikādi-pradhānāḥ);24 referring to the vibhūtis25 (specified in verse 27 as the ṛṣis, the manus, and others)]; nara — human beings; tiryak — [and] animals; sṛjyante — are brought forth into being.

Translation

This form of the Puruṣa [Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu] is the repository and the imperishable seed of the innumerable avatāras. It is from the portions of His portion [Brahmā] that the devas, other evolved beings, human beings, and animals are brought forth into being.
