इन्द्रारिव्याकुलं लोकं मृडयन्ति युगे युगे ॥ २८ ॥
indrāri-vyākulaṁ lokaṁ mṛḍayanti yuge yuge
Synonyms
ete — all these [previously mentioned avatāras (purvoktāḥ)133]; ca — as well as [those who have not been mentioned (ca śabdād anuktāś ca)]; aṁśa — [are either] portions; kalāḥ — [or] minute portions [vibhūtis]; puṁsaḥ — of the [first] Puruṣa [prathamam uddiṣṭasya puṁsaḥ puruṣasya]; kṛṣṇaḥ — Śrī Kṛṣṇa; tu — however [who was counted as the twentieth avatāra in the list (viṁśatitamāvatāratvena kathitaḥ)]; svayaṁ bhagavān — [is] Bhagavān Himself in His ownmost134 original existential being [meaning that He is Bhagavān by His very own constitutional nature, not because He is manifested from Bhagavān, nor because of the superimposition of “Godhood” upon Him (svayam eva bhagavān na tu bhagavataḥ prādurbhūtatayā na tu vā bhagavattādhyāsenety arthaḥ), signifying that He is the ground and source even of the Puruṣa (puruṣasyāpy avatārī); as pointed out in the first verse of this chapter (jagṛhe pauruṣaṁ rūpam iti padoktaḥ)135]; [appearing (avatīrya)136]; yuge yuge — in every age; [all these avatāras]; mṛḍayanti — delight [sukhinaṁ kurvanti137]; lokam — the world; vyākulam — [when] it is oppressed [or persecuted (upadrutam)138]; indra-ari — [by] the enemies of Indra [or those opposed to the divine order represented by his post; here in the last line, Sūta concludes the section by stating the common purpose of all the avatāras (sarvāvatāra-sādhāraṇaṁ prayojanam upasaṁharati)139].
Translation
All these avatāras are either portions (aṁśas) or minute portions (kalās) of the first Puruṣa. Śrī Kṛṣṇa, however, is Bhagavān Himself in His ownmost original existential being. Appearing in every yuga, all these avatāras delight the world when it is oppressed by the enemies of Indra.
