नरदेवत्वमापन्नः सुरकार्यचिकीर्षया ।
समुद्रनिग्रहादीनि चक्रे वीर्याण्यतः परम् ॥ २२ ॥
nara-devatvam āpannaḥ sura-kārya-cikīrṣayā
samudra-nigrahādīni cakre vīryāṇy ataḥ param

ataḥ param — thereafter [in the eighteenth advent (aṣṭādaśe’vatāre)103]; [the Puruṣa]; āpannaḥ — assumed [prāptaḥ]; nara-devatvam — the form of a king [as Śrī Rāma (śrī rāma-rūpeṇāvatīrṇaḥ)]; cikīrṣayā — with the intention of accomplishing [kartum icchayā]; sura-kārya — the work of the gods [in the form of slaying Rāvaṇa (rāvaṇa-vadha-rūpam)]; cakre — He performed [kṛtavān104]; vīryāṇi — heroic feats [karmāṇi]; samudra-nigraha-ādīni — such as surmounting the ocean [by erecting a bridge over it (setu-bandha-rūpeṇa)105].

Translation

Thereafter, in the eighteenth avatāra, the Puruṣa assumed the form of a king [as Śrī Rāma]. With the intention of accomplishing the work of the suras [in the form of slaying Rāvaṇa], He performed heroic feats, such as surmounting the ocean [by erecting a bridge over it].
