ददार करजैर्वक्षस्येरकां कटकृद्यथा ॥ १८ ॥
dadāra karajair vakṣasy erakāṁ kaṭa-kṛd yathā
Synonyms
caturdaśam — [in] the fourteenth advent [avatāram87]; [the Puruṣa]; bibhrat — assumed; nāra-siṁham — the form of a man-lion [(nāra-siṁhaṁ rūpam);88 as Narasiṁhadeva]; dadāra — [and] ripped apart; karajaiḥ — with His claws [nakhaiḥ89]; vakṣasi90 — the chest; ūrjitam — [of] the formidable [or exceedingly powerful (ati-baliṣṭham)]; daitya-indram — king of the demons [Hiraṇyakaśipu]; yathā — just as; kaṭa-kṛt — a straw mat weaver [āstara-nirmātā]; [splits (vidārayati)]; erakām — straw [of a particularly long variety (dīrghākārāṁs tṛṇa-viśeṣān)91].
Translation
In the fourteenth avatāra, the Puruṣa assumed the form of a man-lion [Narasiṁhadeva] and ripped apart with His claws the chest of the formidable king of the daityas [Hiraṇyakaśipu], just as a straw mat weaver splits straw.
