कृष्णाङ्घ्रिसेवामधिमन्यमान उपाविशत्प्रायममर्त्यनद्याम् ॥ ५ ॥
vimarśitau heyatayā purastāt
kṛṣṇāṅghri-sevām adhimanyamāna
upāviśat prāyam amartya-nadyām
Synonyms
atho — thereafter [anantaram43]; [the emperor (adhirāṭ)44]; vihāya — gave up [tyaktvā45]; imam — [both] this; lokam — world [the earth with all its opulence (śrī-yutaṁ imaṁ bhū-lokam)46]; ca — and; amum — the next [meaning the abode of heaven (svarga-lokam)47]; [since both (ubhau)]; purastāt — [were] already previously [even prior to the curse (śāpāt pūrvam eva);48 or even while in the midst of ruling the kingdom (rājya-madhya eva)]; vimarśitau — concluded [vicāritau]; [by him (svena)49]; heyatayā — as fit to be abandoned [because of their impermanence and affliction with misery (anityatva duhkha-miśratvādinā)50]; [then (tataḥ)51]; adhimanyamānaḥ — considering as the ultimate object of attainment [beyond all other human goals (sarva-puruṣārthebhyo’dhikāṁ jānan)]; sevām — the divine service; kṛṣṇa-aṅghri — [of] Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet; [Parīkṣit52]; upāviśat — sat down; amartya-nadyām — on the bank of the celestial river Gaṅgā [deva-nadyāṁ gaṅgāyām53]; [with a vow (saṅkalpena)]; prāyam — to fast until death [(yavaj jīvam anaśana-vrataṁ cakāra);54 or in such a manner that he might attain the supreme refuge (prāyaṁ prakṛṣṭam ayanaṁ śaraṇaṁ yathā bhavati tathā)].
Translation
Thereafter, the emperor gave up both this world and the next, having already previously concluded both of them as fit to be abandoned. Then, considering the divine service of Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet as the ultimate object of attainment, Parīkṣit sat down on the bank of the celestial river Gaṅgā with a vow to fast until death.
