अहो वयं धन्यतमा नृपाणां महत्तमानुग्रहणीयशीलाः ।
राज्ञां कुलं ब्राह्मणपादशौचाद्दूराद्विसृष्टं बत गर्ह्यकर्म ॥ १३ ॥
aho vayaṁ dhanyatamā nṛpāṇāṁ
mahattamānugrahaṇīya-śīlāḥ
rājñāṁ kulaṁ brāhmaṇa-pāda-śaucād
dūrād visṛṣṭaṁ bata garhya-karma
Synonyms
rājā — the king; uvāca — said; aho — how wondrous [spoken out of astonishment at the attainment of the unattainable (alabhya-lābhenāścaryaṁ sūcayati aho iti)92]; vayam — [that] we [Pāṇḍavas93]; dhanya-tamāḥ [jātāḥ94] — [have become] the most highly blessed [implying that whereas those who are fit to obtain life’s general aims are “blessed” (dhanaṁ puruṣārtham arhantīti dhanyāḥ), we have become “the most highly blessed,” being fit to obtain the divine service of Bhagavān, which is the ultimate aim beyond all others (tatrāpi parama-puruṣārtho bhagavat-sevā tam-arhantīti dhanyatamās tathā-bhūtā vayam)95]; nṛpāṇām — among kings [nṛpāṇāṁ madhye96]; [since]; śīlāḥ — [our] demeanor [or mode of conduct (vṛttam)]; anugrahaṇīya — [has been deemed] worthy of the grace [anugrahārham97]; mahattama — [of] great sages [such as you (mahattamānāṁ bhavatām)98]; [and this occurrence is extremely rare for kings, as now stated (etac ca rājñām ati-durlabham ity āha)]; bata — alas [spoken out of regret or lamentation (khede)99]; garhya-karma — [due to involvement in] despicable acts [characterized by violence and other improprieties (hiṁsādi lakṣaṇaṁ yasya tādṛśam);100 here referring to himself (garhyaṁ karma yasyety ātmānam uddiśyoktam)]; kulam — the dynasty; rājñām — of kings; visṛṣṭam — is cast [kṣiptam]; dūrāt — far away; pāda-śaucāt — from the water that washes the feet [pāda-prakṣālanodakāt]; brāhmaṇa — [of] the brāhmaṇas [(brāhmaṇānām); meaning that the kings are cast far away even from the place where the brāhmaṇas’ feet are washed, which is itself distant from the hermitage (āśramād dūra-stha pāda-śauca-sthalād api ārād dūre);101 or that they are left far from the purifying influence rooted in the service of the brāhmaṇas’ feet (pāda-sevā-mūlaka-viśuddher dūrāt tyaktam)102]; [implying that kings are generally unfit to stand or remain in their presence (sthātum ayogyam ity arthaḥ)].
Translation
The king said: How wondrous that we [Pāṇḍavas] have become the most highly blessed among kings, since our demeanor has been deemed worthy of the grace of great sages such as you! Alas! Due to involvement in despicable acts, the dynasty of kings is cast far away from the water that washes the feet of the brāhmaṇas.
