prāyaśaḥ — generally [or ordinarily (sādhāraṇye)397]; sādhavaḥ — sages; na vyathanti — are neither disturbed; na hṛṣyanti — nor delighted; yojitāḥ — [even] while engaged [saṁyojitā api398]; paraiḥ — by others [anyaiḥ399]; dvandveṣu — in the dualities [such as happiness and distress (sukha-duḥkhādiṣu)400]; loke — in [i.e., of] this world; [signifying that they are neither delighted when engaged in pleasant circumstances nor disturbed when involved in painful ones (sukhe yojitā na hṛṣyanti tathā duḥkhe yojitā na vyathanti)401]; yataḥ — because; ātmā — the self; aguṇa-āśrayaḥ — [is] the refuge of the nirguṇa state [meaning that it is never the refuge of empirically conditioned happiness and distress (prākṛta sukha-duḥkhādy āśrayaḥ na bhavati);402 the sense is that the conditioned psyche as a whole, and not the ātmā, is the refuge of the guṇas and their modifications in the form of happiness and distress (guṇā harṣādayaḥ teṣām āśrayaḥ antaḥkaraṇam eva na ātmā), and since the sages are free from the misappropriation of the psyche as the self, their imperturbability is perfectly appropriate (atas teṣām antaḥkaraṇam ādhyāsābhāvāt kṣobhābhāva ucita iti bhāvaḥ)403].

Translation

Generally, sages are neither disturbed nor delighted even while engaged by others in the dualities of this world, because the self is the refuge of the nirguṇa state.
