अवज्ञातमिवात्मानं मन्यमानश्चुकोप ह ॥ २८ ॥
avajñātam ivātmānaṁ manyamānaś cukopa ha
Synonyms
alabdha — having not been provided [na labdham244]; tṛṇa — a seat of straw [tṛṇāsannam]; bhūmi — a place where to sit [upaveśa-sthānañ ca]; ādiḥ — or any other related courtesies [those normally associated with the cordial offering of a sitting place to a guest (ādi-śabdād anyañ copaveśārtham)245]; asamprāpta — nor having been offered [na samprāptaḥ]; arghya — water to wash his hands; sūnṛtaḥ — [or] any words of welcome [priya-vacanam]; [the king (rājā)246]; manyamānaḥ — felt; ātmānam — himself; avajñātam iva — to have been disrespected [avahelitam iva247]; cukopa ha — [and] became irate [thinking that the sage had done nothing at all to receive him as a guest (alabdhetyādi mamātithyam anena kim api na kṛtam iti cukopa)248]; [it is to be understood that Parīkṣit’s internal feeling-state in this regard was prompted exclusively by the will of Śrī Bhagavān out of His causeless grace (to make possible Parīkṣit’s meeting with Śuka and his reception of the Bhāgavata) (atra tasyedṛśa-bhāvo bhagavad-anugrahamayaḥ śrī bhagavad-icchayaiveti jñeyam)249].
Translation
Having not been provided a seat of straw, a place where to sit, or any other related courtesies, nor having been offered water to wash his hands or any words of welcome, the king felt himself to have been disrespected and became irate.
