सूत उवाच
अभ्यर्थितस्तदा तस्मै स्थानानि कलये ददौ ।
द्यूतं पानं स्त्रियः सूना यत्राधर्मश्चतुर्विधः ॥ ३८ ॥

abhyarthitas tadā tasmai sthānāni kalaye dadau
dyūtaṁ pānaṁ striyaḥ sūnā yatrādharmaś catur-vidhaḥ

sūtaḥ — Śrī Sūta; uvāca — said; tadā — thereupon [tataḥ231]; abhyarthitaḥ — being appealed to [in this manner (evaṁ samprārthitaḥ)232]; [the king (rājā)]; dadau — allotted; sthānāni — certain [restricted] places; tasmai — for him; kalaye — Kali; [to reside (vāsam)]; yatra — wherein; adharmaḥ — immoral acts; catuḥ-vidhaḥ — of four types; [abound (bhavati)]; [namely]; dyūtam — gambling [which amounts to falsehood (anṛtaṁ gṛhītam) and thus destroys truth, as previously stated (tac ca pūrva-vad eva satya-nāśakam)233]; pānam — intoxication [(madaḥ), including or synonymous with pride (garvaḥ), which destroys austerity (tapo-nāśakam)234]; striyaḥ — prostitution [(kāma-striyaḥ saṅgaḥ), which destroys purity, as previously stated (sa ca pūrva-vad eva śauca-nāśakaḥ)235]; sūnā — [and] animal slaughter [(prāṇi-vadhāḥ);236 which involves cruelty (krauryam) and destroys compassion (dayā-nāśakam)237].

Translation

Śrī Sūta said: Thereupon, being appealed to in this manner, the king allotted certain restricted places for Kali to reside, wherein immoral acts of four types abound—namely, gambling, intoxication, prostitution, and animal slaughter.
