परीक्षितैवमादिष्टः स कलिर्जातवेपथुः ।
तमुद्यतासिमाहेदं दण्डपाणिमिवोद्यतम् ॥ ३५ ॥
parīkṣitaivam ādiṣṭaḥ sa kalir jāta-vepathuḥ
tam udyatāsim āhedaṁ daṇḍa-pāṇim ivodyatam
Synonyms
sūtaḥ — Śrī Sūta; uvāca — said; ādiṣṭaḥ — having been instructed [(anu-śiṣṭaḥ);218 or commanded (ājñaptaḥ)219]; evam — in this manner; parīkṣitā — by Parīkṣit; saḥ — he; kaliḥ — Kali; jāta-vepathuḥ — [who] trembled [out of fear (bhayena sañjāta-kampaḥ)]; āha — spoke; idam — as follows [vakṣyamānam]; tam — to him; udyata-asim — [who] with his upraised sword [uddhṛta-khaḍgam220]; [stood fast (sthitam)221]; iva — like; daṇḍa-pāṇim — the wielder of the rod of chastisement [Yamarāja]; udyatam — ready [or prepared (udyuktam);222 to take his life (sva-vadhārtham)].
Translation
Śrī Sūta said: Having been instructed in this manner by Parīkṣit, Kali, who trembled out of fear, spoke as follows to him, who with his upraised sword stood fast like the wielder of the rod of chastisement [Yamarāja], ready to take his life.
