विवत्सां साश्रुवदनां क्षामां यवसमिच्छतीम् ॥ ३ ॥
vivatsāṁ sāśru-vadanāṁ kṣāmāṁ yavasam icchatīm
Synonyms
ca — [he] also [saw (dadarśa);12 (apaśyat)13]; gām — [that] the cow [the Earth goddess who had assumed the form of a cow (go-rūpa-dhāriṇīṁ pṛthivīm)14]; dharma-dughām — who provides milk and ghee that are invaluable for religious ritual purposes [(dharmārthaṁ payo-ghṛta-rūpaṁ havir dogdhrīm);15 or who is the cause of dharma by providing the articles necessary for religious sacrifices (yajñādi-sāmagrī-sampādakatvena dharma-hetu-bhūtām)16]; bhṛśam — [was] utterly [aty artham17]; dīnām — dejected [kṛpaṇām18]; āhatām — being kicked [or assailed (tāḍitām)19]; padā — by the foot [pādena]; śūdra — [of] the śūdra [śūdrasya]; vivatsām — barren of calf [(vatsa-rahitām); due to the perishing of grass and vegetation (śasyādi prasava-kṣayāt);20 or in other words, due to being deprived of her share of sacrifice (yajñādi-bhāga-lābhābhāvāt)21]; sāśru-vadanām — her face covered in tears [(aśru-sahitaṁ vadanaṁ yasyās tām); due to the demise of religion and virtue (dharma-kṣayeṇa)22]; kṣāmām — enfeebled [or emaciated (kṛśām); due to the absence of sacrifice (yajñābhāvāt)23]; icchatīm — [and] longing [kāmayamānām]; yavasam — for grass [(tṛṇam); meaning, for her share of sacrifice (yajña-bhāgam)24].
Translation
He also saw that the cow, who provides milk and ghee that are invaluable for religious ritual purposes, was utterly dejected, being kicked by the śūdra’s foot, barren of calf, her face covered in tears, enfeebled, and longing for grass.
