लोभाद्यधर्मप्रकृतिं दृष्ट्वोवाचानुजं नृपः ॥ ५ ॥
lobhādy-adharma-prakṛtiṁ dṛṣṭvovācānujaṁ nṛpaḥ
Synonyms
kāle anugate tu — with the advance of time’s own inevitable course [sva-samaye anuprāpte sati20]; [evam etāni21] ati ariṣṭāni — [all these] catastrophic [aty-aniṣṭa-sūcakāni]; nimittāni — omens; [became commonplace, meaning that when time favors all vices (doṣeṣu kālaḥ sānukūlaḥ), greed and other such forms of immorality arise naturally (lobhādy adharmāḥ svābhāvikā jātāḥ), and hence no contradiction is involved in the matter of the devolution of the acquired nature of all things (prakṛtitve ca vigānam api nāstīti bhāvaḥ)]; dṛṣṭvā — witnessing; adharma — the immoral; prakṛtim — nature [svabhāvam22]; nṛṇām — of human beings; lobha-ādi — [exhibited in the form of] greed [anger and the whole assortment of other vices (krodhādi saṅgrahaḥ)]; nṛpaḥ — the king [Yudhiṣṭhira]; uvāca — spoke the following words; anujam — to [his] younger brother [Bhīma].
Translation
With the advance of time’s own inevitable course, all these catastrophic omens became commonplace. Witnessing the immoral nature of human beings, exhibited in the form of greed [anger and the whole assortment of other vices], King Yudhiṣṭhira spoke the following words to his younger brother [Bhīma].
